Folic Acid


One of the most commonly taken vitamins when pregnant is folic acid. Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin of group B, specifically vitamin B9. It is an important vitamin before and during pregnancy as it prevents defects in the baby’s neural tube, that is, those problems that may arise in the brain or spinal cord. Folic acid is helpful as long as it is taken before conception and in the initial weeks of pregnancy. This is because neural tube defects usually start during the first four weeks of pregnancy. That is why it is important to have enough folic acid in a woman’s body before pregnancy.

The ideal date to start taking folic acid is two months before the beginning of pregnancy until the 12th week of gestation. Other congenital defects that can be avoided with an adequate intake of folic acid in the body are cleft lip, cleft palate and some heart problems.


The recommended amount for all women capable of becoming pregnant is 400 micrograms of folic acid, always as part of a healthy diet. If the woman has suffered from a pregnancy with neural tube defects, it is necessary to consult her doctor before the next pregnancy to find out how much folic acid to take. Intake is recommended for at least the first trimester, although it is beneficial to continue taking folic acid throughout pregnancy as it must produce the extra blood cells your body needs during that period. 

And it should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach, since its absorption is greater. It will always be the obstetrician who will tell you how much folic acid you should take, among other vitamins, and even when you should take them.
